Japanese Meiji Period Kyu Gunto Sword with Old Family Blade and Mons Crest

The sword has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 34 inches, with a blade length of approximately 21-1/2 inches. The blade shows spots and surface dirt, but it is generally very clean and it displays a visible temper line. The grip is covered in sharkskin, tightly triple wrapped in brass wire. The pierced guard with cherry blossoms as well as the knuckle guard and the pommel all show an uncleaned patina. Mounted on the hilt backstrap is a silver Mons family crest. The tang reflects the fact that the old blade was cut down in the Meiji period. The scabbard shows some wear and areas of plating loss. Overall very good condition.
