The pottery stein is approximately 5-1/2 inches tall, exclusive of the thumb lift. The stein exhibits age toning, some spots, and very slight wear to the image of the naval ensign kriegsflagge, but the stein is without chips or cracks. The edge of the lid is engraved with what appears to be “S M U UB94 26. XI. 18”. The lid engraving presumably indicates that the stein was owned by a sailor with the initials “S M U” who served on Unterseeboat (“UB”) 94 in 1918, The submarine U-94 was surrendered in November of 1918 (the date engraved on the lid is the German abbreviation for the date of 26 November, 1918). The stein is in excellent condition, without chips or cracks.
